Homes: By the Decade

Have you ever wondered how old the majority of homes are in the U.S.? There is a widespread stereotype that you’ll find remnants of the Roaring Twenties while strolling through states like Massachusetts and Vermont. Oppositely, you might think California was comprised of newer condominiums and McMansions. Have you thought about which decades are most represented currently in our housing market? Zillow did.

New data released by Zillow details the decades represented in our current housing market. They analyzed data from single-family homes built between 1900 and 2014 to reach their conclusions. Surprisingly, unlike the stereotypes, they found that the majority of homes in the Northeast were built in the ‘80s, while California contained a large share of homes built in the ‘50s.

The oldest decade represented – the ‘20s – is largely found in Washington, DC.

The newest homes – homes built between 2000 and 2014 – are spread out everywhere from Florida, to South Dakota, to Kentucky.
