10 Ways to Reduce Heating Costs

reduce heating costs blog.jpgWe all know that the mortgage isn’t the only bill you take on when you own a house. You must cover the cost of upkeep, maintenance and utilities to keep your house comfortable. After all, you didn’t buy the thing to not enjoy living in it! Water, cooling, heating… it can all add up to quite a bit! According to the US Department of Energy in 2012 the average cost per person on their residential energy expenditure was $750.00 and 48% of that goes into heating and cooling your home! As the cooler months are approaching let’s look at ten ways we can reduce the heating costs:

  1. Ceiling Fans- if your fans are moving in a counterclockwise rotation then they will cool but if you switch them the other way it will redistribute that warm air that has risen to the top of the ceiling.
  2. Windows- open the curtains/blinds of your sun facing windows to heat up your home!
  3. Thermostat- this one seems obvious, but adjusting your thermostat you will reduce energy costs but did you know, for every 1 degree adjustment for an 8-hour period you will save 1% of your costs. That is a 30% reduction if you reduce your temperature in your home by 1 degree every night while you sleep!
  4. Filter- change your HVAC filter once a month to lower your energy consumption
  5. Registers- don’t bloc the heat registers with furniture our other obstacles.
  6. Maintenance- maintain your HVAC system by getting tune ups in the fall and spring seasons.
  7. Lock it up- Locking windows and doors will help seal them better not letting the cool air in
  8. Don’t heat the rooms you don’t use- by closing the heat registers in guestrooms or other rooms not often used, you will direct the heat to the ones you are in.
  9. Caulk- find air leaks in your duct work, under doors or around windows and seal them with caulk or weather stripping!
  10. Close up your Fireplace- if you aren’t using your fireplace block the flu so that your warm air doesn’t escape!
