DIY Crate Coffee Table

By Amy Patterson

Fall is officially on its way – yes, it won’t technically be here until September 23 – but we were just too excited about this DIY crate coffee table to wait! This coffee table is everything you need to get your living room (or any room for that matter) ready for fall. It’s super simple and the DIY’s creator did it all for under $40.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 4  wood crates (the DIY’s creator found hers at Michael’s – but you can find them at many craft stores)
  • 1 piece heavy duty plywood
  • 1 can of wood stain (we love the darker stain for fall)
  • foam or paint brush for stain
  • 4caster wheels with locks
  • 24 5/8″ wood screws
  • electric wood sander (if you want to sand the edges)
  • 4 small L brackets

Here’s what to do:

  1. If you would like sanded edges rather than hard corners, sand the edges of your crates until rounded
  2. Stain your crates and the top of your plywood with a minimum of two coats
  3. Ensure that the stain is completely dry, then screw the caster wheels to the bottom of your plywood (one wheel at each corner)
  4. Layout your crates in the design you want (notice that the creator of this DIY left an opening in the middle for décor)
  5. Fasten the crates to your base plywood
  6. Insert your L brackets inside the middle section at the height you want your plywood shelf to rest
  7. Measure, cut, stain and place plywood atop the L brackets in the center of the table
  8. Insert your décor and enjoy!
