For Better or For Worse

For Better or For Worse

For better or worse blogLove at first sight. The honeymoon phase. Making a long-term commitment. When you think about it, it is crazy how many times buying a house is like being in a relationship. Hop on this roller coaster of love (house love) with me and we will venture to consider the phases one can expect in their relationship with their home.

Let’s start with the first time you spotted it, that for sale sign in the front yard, perhaps it was love at first sight or maybe there was just something about it, something that you can’t quite put your finger on that made you want to know more. But as you spent more time with that house, the more you found that you loved about it. You pulled up pictures of it online, read all about its features, and discussed it at length with your family and friends. At some point you realized, there is no denying it—you were in love with this house!

So, you commit to the house and move in! For the first few months you spend time blissfully walking around the house, checking out the yard, and getting to know every nook and cranny it has. You are so happy; sometimes you can’t even believe that this house is yours! But then over time, the honeymoon phase wares off. Next thing you know, you want to go to brunch with your girlfriends or catch a game with the guys but the sink is leaking and needs your attention instead. Or what about that lazy Saturday you were hoping for but it’s the last chance you will have to mow your lawn for the next couple of weeks—you can nap later, you need to mow.

You are still committed, for better or worse, and really, you are overall happy with this house. You couldn’t imagine not waking up to that sun coming through that one window or the way the breeze feels coming in through your screen door. Honestly, even on the worst days, when you day dream about jumping ship and selling the house you realize that it will be a lot of effort and a little heartache. So, you stick with it—you love your house and in return it provides you with a sense of security and beautiful memories. After years together, you look back and realize that you have been through some stuff—great times, frustrations, quiet moments of pure joy, and a few disappointments. There are pictures of you and your house all over social media and framed on your walls; you realize that this house has truly become a part of you.
