Home Listing Photo Fails

By Morgan Saylor

Your home looks pretty good, so it should photograph well also, right? Wrong.

If you’re listing your home, there’s a lot that can go wrong with your photos if you’re not careful. Craig Donofrio with realtor.com has drudged up examples of all sorts of listing photo fails that could sabotage your sell.

Corners – Snapping pictures of an empty corner is nothing special – all houses have corners. When photographing a home, aim for two corners to give more perspective as to the shape of the room.

Grass Pics – Nature is beautiful, but taking a picture of that patch of grass two feet in front of you, sans house, doesn’t really translate as valuable. Realtor.com advises: back up – take a picture featuring your house and all the yard.

Clutter – No one likes clutter, not their own, and definitely not yours. If you’re taking pictures of your home to sell, take the time to tame your clutter.

Appliances Pics – A close-up of a less than brand new appliance (oven, fridge, dish washer, you name it) is not advisable when selling your home. It adds no real value, according to Donofrio's blog. It's best left to existing within a couple of shots of your kitchen. Leave close looks at appliances to inspectors.

Blurry Pics – To publish a blurry picture to your home listing is a waste of time. Using a camera phone makes blurry photos inevitable. Hire a photographer or borrow a friend’s camera to take a steadier, brighter, non-blurry photo.
