How to Prep for Frost

With the arctic air that is sweeping across the Midwest and Northeast I’m afraid I may be too late with some of these helpful tips on what to do to prepare for your first frost of the season but perhaps not! Let’s look at what can be done to prepare our homes and increase its energy efficiency!

  1. prep for frost blog.jpgIf you have an underground sprinkler system, get all the water out of the lines. If you aren’t sure how to do this call your sprinkler maintenance company and try to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. It is a simple process to clear out the lines but if they freeze it can be very expensive to repair!
  2. Sealing foundation vents will help keep your pipes from freezing by keeping the cold air outside, where it belongs. Some foundation vents do close automatically when temperatures reach a certain low, but not all.
  3. Prep your furnace for its busiest time of year! Change out the old furnace filter to prevent the allergens and dust in the filter from blowing all around your home.
  4. Check weather stripping around your doors and windows—these areas can be a major source of heat loss. Inspect the weather stripping to make sure it doesn’t have any cracks or tears and check its flexibility. This goes for your garage doors as well!
