Kitchen Hacks That Save You Money

By Amy Patterson

Living a greener lifestyle can save you money, while helping contribute to a better environment. While there are tons of green changes that you can make in your life and in your home, a large majority of green upgrades can be made in the kitchen. Here are the some of the simplest ways to greenify your kitchen:

UNPLUG – If you’re like most homeowners, you have at least a dozen appliances in your kitchen. Obviously you don’t want to worry about unplugging the big ones (unless they’re easily accessible), but even the small ones – blenders, coffee makers, toaster ovens and so on, can save you big. Did you know that you could save up to $100 annually by unplugging your kitchen appliances?

AIR DRY – Save energy (and money) by air drying your wash rags, hand towels and dish cloths on a towel rack after washing.

UPGRADE – Did you know that appliances more than ten years old use 70-90% more energy and power than their new counterparts? By upgrading your appliances to Energy Star choices, you’ll save more in the long run.

SWITCH – If you missed our post on switching from paper and plastic to more sustainable materials, now’s the time for you to make the switch for yourself. Ditch the paper towels and napkins for linen versions and swap out plastic containers and straws for glass ones.
