The Piggy Bank: Free Family Fun

The Piggy bank free family fun blog-01.jpgOver the last few weeks we’ve focused on our children and teens and how best to teach them financial smarts for the future but the best thing we can do is lead by our example. If we are constantly shopping but tell them not to spend so much money shopping, then our words won’t get us very far. One question that crossed my mind was, what do we do as a family? Do we only have fun when we are spending money? And how frequently do we have fun without spending any money? You see, my kids are early elementary age and I figure that we are teaching them right now, how to have fun and enjoy entertainment. In looking to the future, we could be in for some expensive teenage years. So, I made a list of things that cost little to no money which I think my family would enjoy and wanted to share it with you in case you could benefit from it too!

Play hide and seek

Have a bonfire in the backyard and tell stories from when my husband and I were kids

Take the dog for a walk

Go on a hike

Go to the play ground

Have a picnic

Play board games/ cards

Pick something for dinner and cook it as a family

Have a dance party

Build a blanket fort

Have an indoor campout where everyone sleeps in the living room… maybe in the blanket fort

Plant some seeds

Wash the cars/ bikes

Bake and decorate cookies or cupcakes

Create a scavenger hunt

Try out new hairstyles (this one is probably only fun for the girls)

Pick a family favorite book and act it out- record it on your phone for future laughs!

If you have any other ideas or have had success with the ones listed, we would love to hear from you in the comments below! Let’s create a community that celebrates fun without high costs; after all they do say, the best things in life aren’t things at all!
