The Piggy Bank: Make Your Own Savings Bank

Piggy bank make your own savings bank blog-01.jpgThis project is right up my alley; it involves crafting, is inexpensive, and promotes financial discussions. It is a win-win-win! You just need an empty container with a cap—think square juice containers, peanut butter jars or big powered drink canisters. Once these containers are thoroughly washed out (no creepy crawlies in the savings banks please) and dried, the fun can begin!

If you are like me then you have lots of crafty things laying around such as, patterned papers, glitter, buttons, fabric flowers, etc. but if you aren’t like me, there might be a bit of a cost involved. Just pick up a few items that will liven up your savings banks- you can go with animal print paper, make the whole thing look like a party with all over glitter, or if you are up for the challenge, turn the container into your favorite animal! Whatever you and your kid decide to do you want it to be fun and something they are going to want to use in the future to save up all their earnings and allowance money until they are old enough to open a savings account at your local bank.

Once the savings bank is beautiful, cool, trendy, or (insert a word for “whatever look you were going for” here) then cut a slit in the top of the container, parents may need to help their kids with this one. Now you and your kiddos will be super stoked to save in their personalized savings bank! Have fun!
