When To Replace Your Fridge?

When to Replace your Fridge?

Far gone are the days of the ice box, unless your refrigerator goes out, in which case back to the old ice box we go… except now we call it a cooler.  If we can learn the signs to look for maybe, we can save ourselves from the moldy cheese and rotten broccoli casserole. According to MSN.com, here are some signs of what to look for:

  • The back of the fridge feels hot.

BBBb6Lo.img.jpegGenerally, the back is going to be warmer than the front because that is where the motor lives. However, if you feel a large amount of heat, the motor may be running too hot!

  • Your food is going bad too quickly.

Is your guacamole turning brown? That is normal. However, if your head of lettuce is turning brown you might have an issue! The fridge might not be getting enough power. One way to tell if this is happening is if your food spoils before its expiration date. If this is the case, have a repairman come check it out!

  • It’s too loud.

Your fridge will emit a gentle hum but if it is dying then it will likely give a buzzing noise because your motor is going out. Try unplugging and plugging in the fridge, if it continues your fridge may be on its last leg.

  • It’s too quiet.

BBBb9Dk.img.jpegA completely silent fridge filled with warm food is definitely not a good sign! It points us towards the compressor. Make sure that your home’s electrical panel doesn’t have a breaker flipped. If that isn’t it, give the unplugging and plugging back in method a shot! Still not humming? Break out that new-fangled ice chest a.k.a. cooler to save anything salvageable!

  • Frost Build Up

A little frost is acceptable. But if you find yourself in a situation where you might as well be carving an ice sculpture just to bust out the chicken nuggets you should consider your appliance outdated and inefficient.

Keep an eye on these symptoms so you aren’t having to scramble to find a replacement fridge in a pinch!
