How to pull off a statement wall

By Amy Patterson

Now that it’s finally spring, color is beginning to surround us once again. But what about bringing that color inside…and creating some boldness in your home? Maybe you are a little intimidated by the thought of painting an entire room a bold color; if that’s the case – a statement wall may be the perfect solution for you.bigstock-Select-Color-Swatch-To-Paint-W-61316465

What is a statement wall? A statement wall is a single wall in a room that is a different color than the other walls in the room. Usually, the statement wall is a bold color, while the other walls are a neutral color.

Here are some important things to remember when creating a statement wall:

  • Utilize color relationships – look at a color wheel and determine which colors complement each other, from there you will have a good start to determine how bold within the shade you want to go (for example: if your room is a shade of brown, a great complementary color for your statement wall would be blue)
  • There should only be two different wall colors per room – you don’t want your guests to feel like they are exploring a fun house at a carnival, so it’s best to keep to one statement wall (two wall colors) per room – keep in mind that there are exceptions to every rule, and sometimes, when using a neutral color palette, this rule can be broken
  • If you want to ease in to the statement wall idea – try painting the bottom half of one of your walls first to see if you like the idea of a bold wall
  • If you’re feeling really bold – try painting your statement wall in chalkboard paint, it now comes in a variety of colors and adds an extra element of fun to your room
