Air Ducts 101

By Morgan Saylor

As a new home owner, you probably try to keep the air in your home fresh. If the air in your home isn’t so fresh-smelling, should you pay to have your air ducts cleaned?Stacey Reed via houselogic.com writes, “probably not” – but explains the emphasis on probably.

According to the article, breathing in dust and particles of cobwebs and pet hair and the like have, through expert research, reached no conclusions that indicate cleaning your ducts positively impact indoor air quality or your health.

However, leaky air ducts that pull in dirty air from basements, crawlspaces, garages and attics can be harmful. This issue can be fixed with foil-backed duct-tape.

Checking your ducts for vermin debris (which you can observe yourself with a flashlight and checking out the register grill) or mold growth (which can be observed the same way), you may want to look into a good duct-cleaning.
