Architecture 101

By Morgan Saylor

You don’t have to go to school for architecture to communicate to your real estate agent the style of home you’re looking for. Cozy or contemporary, modern or historical, understanding home styles has its advantages.

Part of knowing what you’re looking for will help you on your homebuying search in many ways: identifying the style of home you’re most into will tell you much of what you need to know about floor plan (if you want a home that’s all one level, you might be more inclined towards a ranch or cottage) or fine details (if you’re looking for a home with character and ornate trim and design, you might be best suited for a Victorian or colonial style home). It can also give you some idea into approximately when the home was built, if the age of the home is a concern to you.

Movoto has created a fun infographic designed to help you easily identify styles of homes, from Cape Cod to Farmhouse, each with its own descriptor.
