Best Colors for Selling

Best Colors for selling blog.jpgWhen selling your home, it is no longer just about your preferences but instead about trying to appeal to your buyer. Unfortunately, you can’t appeal to everyone’s senses but you can follow these rules outlined by Debbie Drummond when it comes to the exterior of your home. She states, “the color scheme of a house should be appropriate for its architectural style and allow it to be comfortable in its community.” When you update your home’s exterior with a fresh coat of paint, you are setting it apart from others on the market and will give your home a polished and clean look that will appeal to buyers.

Debbie included some basic rules when painting the exterior of your home:

  • Contrasting colors add interest, but balance is important
  • Be guided by your neighborhood and by natural surroundings
  • Coordinate the total palette: Consider your roofing, brick, stone or stucco colors and your landscaping as part of the total picture
  • Lean toward neutral and traditional to attract buyers, but make the front door a focal point

She highlighted some different options when selecting your home’s exterior paint color and some tips coordinating with the direction in which you want to go! If you are leaning towards a classic color scheme; that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should opt for black and white, although this is a very classic option, there are options that aren’t as stark. Maybe keep the same idea but vary by going with softer colors like dove gray or moss green for the main color and a contrasting color for the trim, shutters and front door. If your home is a bit more contemporary, then adding a splash of bright color at the entry will draw attention to your house. A great addition to earth tone exteriors on contemporary homes are a rust red, burnt orange, bright purple and turquoise.
