Bug Off!

By Kimberly Shane

Bug Off!

I’ve always imagined having a neighborhood that was concealed in one large bubble, like the neighborhood in the movie, Truman Show. The temperature could be regulated, we could have scheduled rain and the best part, no mosquitos!!!! I understand that most bugs contribute something positive to their environment but I could do without those big, red welts covering my legs every summer. Side note, telling a female covered it bug bites, “it’s because you’re so sweet”, only makes them feel better, if they are under the age of 16.

I’ve heard it all, “eat raw garlic, the bugs don’t like the smell” … guess what, neither do people. This is a good option if you like lots of personal space! Another suggestion, “just cover up—wear pants and long sleeves”. You all, I live in a region that is 90% humidity so if you think I’m wearing any more clothes than I must then you are a crazy person. So, what’s a girl to do? I always came prepared for outdoor fun—sun screen for the day, bug spray for the night! But, in being honest with you all, every time I surrounded myself with the cloud of chemicals I always wondered if what I was doing was more harmful than just taking on the bugs and their itchy marks.

There are options to make your own bug spray using natural products! Different oils repel different bugs so it is best to use a combination of essential oils to keep the bugs at bay. For the list of different oils that work and to find out what to mix them with, check out the website using the link below: https://www.diynatural.com/homemade-insect-mosquito-repellent/
