Countertops 101

By Morgan Saylor

A kitchen remodel has many intricate parts: appliances, the back splash, cabinet pulls. There are many design elements to consider if you’re trying to spruce up your kitchen.

Perhaps one of the major focal points of a kitchen is the countertop, of which there are a variety to choose. There are pros and cons to each, and luckily house logic has helped to compile a list for each.

  • Quartz: Stain resistant, bacteria resistant, and resistant to most kitchen-type wear and tear, but you will pay for it.
  • Granite: It’s tough and one of the most desired countertop-types on the market currently, but you must seal it regularly.
  • Crushed Glass: Eco friendly, with no issue standing up to all kitchen activities. Because the crushed glass is set in acrylic, acidic food juices can eat away at it; it’s also a bit pricey.
  • Laminate: It can be anything you want it to be in the way of it’s looks, but it scratches, scores, and generally doesn’t hold up as well as the others countertop-types mentioned here.
  • Tile: Tile is durable and easy to clean or repair, and resists the hazards of cooking, except against pots and skillets. Also, the grout between tiles makes a great breeding ground for germs, so it must be cleaned regularly and sealed also.
