Don't let attachment affect your decisions

By Amy Patterson

Attachment-01

Buying a home is a big decision, one often met with a host of strong feelings. There are so many things to consider, so many decisions to make and so many pros and cons associated with any home selection process. But despite all of the emotions that can get tied up in the home buying process, it’s important to not let your feelings toward a home, or you attachment to a property cause you to overlook potential shortcomings in the property.

Before you even go see a property, you should prepare yourself with a list of items that you are looking for, and a list of items that may be deal-breakers for you. Preparation is essential, because it could mean the difference between finding your dream home and settling.

Sometimes it’s hard to separate yourself from a property, or more importantly, the idea of what a property might be. But if you adhere to the following guidelines, you’ll be in a much better position to make the best long term decision for you and your family.

Here are some sample questions that you should consider adding to your customized home assessment list:

  •  What do you need?
  •  What do you really want?
  •  What are you not willing to accept?
  •  What is your highest price point? How much are you pre-approved for?
  •  How will this property fit your needs in a year? In 5 years? Beyond?
  •  Are there any updates you’ll need/want to do?
  •  Can you afford the maintenance?
  •  Is it big enough? Is it too big?

Before you begin looking for your home, you need to make sure you’ve chosen the perfect neighborhood for your family. You can read more about neighborhood selection here.
