Fun facts about the derby

By Amy Patterson

derby_blog-01Derby season is an anxiously awaited time for Kentuckians. The world-renowned event draws 150,000 visitors every year and is a staple in Kentucky’s history. With the Derby right around the corner, we thought we’d give you a run-down of some of the facts:

  • The race is 1.25 miles
  • The horses are all three-year-old thoroughbreds
  • The first Kentucky Derby was in 1875
  • The term “Triple Crown” was devised by sportswriter Charles Hatton – who gave reference to the same horses running three consecutive races
  • The Mint Julep – an icy concoction of bourbon, mint and sweet syrup – is considered the official drink of the Kentucky Derby
  • Celebrities, presidents and royals are often in attendance
  • There is a derby hat parade for guests show off their stylish headwear

Whether you’re watching from the comfort of your living room or trackside this weekend, we hope you’ll enjoy this year’s derby with your favorite floppy hat and a mint julep in hand.
