Popular Home Design Styles

As you drive through neighborhoods you can likely recognize different home designs. Whether it be from watching HGTV specials or playing the Board Game of Life as a kid; there are some iconic styles that are easy to spot. But when it comes down to it, could you explain what it is that makes a home a Cape Cod or a Tudor? Yep, me neither! Let’s look at what makes each style unique:

Tudor

The siding often varies from the first to the second story; typically, the first story will have an elaborate brick pattern and the second, stucco or wood with a decorative trim.

Cape Cod

The cape cod style was first seen in the 1600’s but was revived in 1930 in the Northeastern US. This style of home can be characterized mostly by the windows with two multipaned window
s on each side of the entry door and a dormer on each side of the home. The siding could be more traditional with wood shingles or a modern, stucco, stone or brick.

Colonial Style

This style of home is one of the most popular in the US and to me, feels very iconic. It’s usually sided with brick or wood and has a medium pitched roof. The windows seem to be all in a row, two on each side of the entry door and five across the second floor.

Craftsman

Lending itself to its name, a craftsman home typically will have a large amount of interior woodwork and porches framed by tapered columns. In addition to these “crafted” elements, the siding is usually a wood or stone and the home boasts a low pitched roof.
