“A New Year, A New You” “365 New Chances” “A New Year is the Beginning of Anything You Want” When I looked up quotes about a new year these are a few I found. They all center around possibility and positive change. For one, I’m not big on new year’s resolutions because I know for me, if it is really something I want to change about myself then why wait until January 1st to start? But for the rest of the world I know they are out setting goals for 2018! Many have a resolution to finally tackle the clutter in their lives. For some the issue is clearing out unused stuff that they have amassed over the last few years, others are struggling with a lack of storage options in their home, and some have a husband who doesn’t like to put stuff in a drawer or closet because placing it on a counter or chair gives him easier access to it…. (ok, maybe that last one is a personal concern) No matter your struggle with clutter, we are here, with the help of the good people over at All You, to help you figure out some great options to get more organized in the new year.

Let’s start off in the kitchen. You know that first can opener you bought? Yep, that one, the one that is all rusted and still somehow works but you have to use a gorilla like grip. Sure you have a new one but what if the new one breaks? Get rid of that rusty one! We tend to hold onto items that no longer serve their purpose because at one time they did and at one time we paid money for them but let’s be real—if you aren’t using it then it’s just taking up space. Speaking of unused items, what about those gifted kitchen gadgets in your utensil drawer? Like for me, a wine aerator. That thing sat in a drawer for 2 years and didn’t get used once—I’m not saying that it doesn’t have a purpose but it didn’t in my life. So it had to go. Once you get your unused or broken cleared out, wipe out your drawers, cabinets and then use draw separators to keep what remains organized.

In cleaning out your kitchen, you will want to go through your food items as well and get rid of anything that has expired or that you won’t be using before its expiration (like the canned Dolmas Vine Leaves stuffed with Rice you somehow thought sounded good during one of your trips to the store). There’s no need for food that will not be used to take up space in the pantry, it’s just one more thing that you will have to move around when you are looking for the item you actually do want to find! The same goes with your fridge and freezer, toss out expired items; some big culprits in my house are salad dressings, frozen bread and freezer burned foods.

Your office shouldn’t get overlooked either. Now, I understand that not everyone has an office in their home but somewhere you have to have office like items. I don’t have a designated office but I do have a storage bench which contains folders filled with past tax information other keepers of documents. So if you don’t have an office, think of your “office like space”. All You recommends designating a command center through use of a binder. The binder should exist in a central location and be the go to place for your frequently used information such as, addresses, phone numbers and utility account numbers. For those electronic odds and ends you’ve collected over the years; get rid of what you are not using and the other items should be stored in a pretty basket and use a cord cubby to manage all those charging cords that sprawl out from our outlets. Cable management boxes exist to hide wires and camouflage power strips, these will help you to wrangle that wire mess under your desk or even in your media center!

One clutter problem that cannot be easily solved with even the best organization ideas from your favorite “Ikea Hackers” article is not enough space. Sometimes we can feel as if we are on the brink of bursting at the seams in our current home or apartment. If you are looking for more space than your current house provides or are looking to move out of your cramped apartment and would like to see what options you have then give us a call at Stockton Mortgage, 1-888-914-2276 or you can visit our website www.smcapproved.com . There is no commitment on your end but homeownership could be more affordable than you thought!
