Revamp your AC to keep cool this summer

By Amy Patterson

revamp_your_ac-01As we inch closer to summer, the weather is heating up fast, and it won’t be long until those muggy afternoons have us switching on our air conditioners. But before you turn yours on, make sure you’re up to date on your air conditioner’s maintenance, or you could end up with a less than optimal cooling experience this season.

For indoor units:

  • Change your air filters every month
  • Make sure you’re using the best air filter for your home and unit
  • Don’t cool rooms that you aren’t using – close the vent(s) to prevent your air conditioner from working harder than it has to
  • Clean your vents regularly to prevent debris build up
  • If you have window units, clean them regularly
  • Get your unit inspected regularly

For outdoor units:

  • Replace filters seasonally as needed
  • Clean or bleach your drip pan and drain pipe
  • Keep the space around your unit clear from debris, weeds and tall grass
  • Clean your unit with a hose at least twice per year
  • Inspect your unit’s insulation
  • Have the unit serviced twice a year by a professional

It’s important that if you ever see icing on an indoor or outdoor unit to shut it off immediately (at the breaker level) to prevent any additional damage to the unit. Icing can be a sign of dirt or debris build up and cause serious harm to your unit.
