The Water Closet Defined

By Morgan Saylor

While shopping for a home and looking through listings, have you ever read about a master suite with bathroom and water closet and it gave you pause – because, what is a water closet, exactly? Look no further than this explanation.

A water closet is a closed off area within a bathroom with a toilet, often times separated from the sink or shower. It allows for more privacy when sharing a bathroom, which is a bonus for most anyone who shares living space!

Realtor.com’s Adriana Velez explains that the etymology of “bathroom” was literally just a room for bathing, and people generally took their business outside, in outhouses. In 1870, “water closets” gained in popularity; by 1890, public awareness about the disease-waste connection led homeowners to demand their own WCs. In the 1900’s Americans began merging bathrooms and toilets to save space, but forgoing privacy.

What’s the advantage of a water closet over a regular old bathroom?

The obvious advantages include its attractiveness to potential buyers – anyone sharing a bathroom should prefer a bathroom with a water closet. Not sharing is really the best way to share, if you think about it.

From the hygienic perspective, Realtor.com also writes that studies show flushing sends microbes into the air – secluding that into a room all its own is also a good selling point.
