Tiny House, Big Cost

By Morgan Saylor

Tiny homes have been touted as having a low living cost associated with it – but what’s the true cost of tiny life?

When some people think of tiny homes, they think the cost of buying one and maintaining it is lower than what it is in actuality.

According to Zillow Porchlight’s Becca Milfeld, tiny home living could be impeded by other associated fees – insurance (cargo trailer or RV insurance, for those classified as RVs), taxes, title and licensing.

If you’re mobile, there are costs associated with that as well. Parking a tiny home at an RV park or on a private farm may incur fees. Some tiny homeowners have run into zoning law issues in relation to their mobile tiny homes, which have essentially rendered them homeless, according to reports out of Portland.

Utilities are, of course, cheaper, as most tiny homes are so tiny that the cost of heating and cooling them are significantly less than a traditional house with a more traditional square footage. But the tiny furniture to deck out a tiny home - that comes with a price tag too. For more on an actual look at tiny home costs, check out this blog.
