How to: Transition to a Paperless Kitchen

By Amy Patterson

Over the past few weeks, a few of our go green posts have broached the topic of shrinking the need for paper products in the kitchen. While items like paper plates and cups are usually an easy thing to ditch and replace with reusable options (especially with the prominence of dishwashers), there are a few items that are not so easy to consider replacing – namely, paper towels and napkins. So, we’re going to make the transition easier by proving a five step process.

  1. Timeline

Create a timeline for you and your family to go paperless and adjust to the transition. Perhaps it would work better for you to ditch paper towels first, and then give yourself a month before tackling a napkin replacement. Make sure your timeline is realistic, low-stress and that it gives you enough time to do it the way you want to.

  1. Stock up

Stock up on enough cloth replacements to keep you from feeling the need to reach for paper. Let the usage and amount of washing you’re willing to do determine the size of your stock. For example, if you have four people in your family and only want to wash your cloths weekly, invest accordingly. To save money, purchase a large piece of fabric (or a few different styles), and divide it (them) into napkin-sized pieces.

  1. Convenience

This is key. The main reason that homeowners reach for paper products is the convenience factor – they’re easy to use and easy to get rid of – so your cloth products should be the same. Whether it’s a nifty wire basket that sits on the dining room table, or a drawer full of colorful options – make sure you have easy access.

  1. Discard

Just like your new cloth accessories have to be convenient to access, they also have to be convenient to toss (just like you would a paper towel or napkin). Happy, Healthy Mama suggests keeping a designated laundry bin in the kitchen.

  1. Pinterest

Pinterest is your friend – and it has tons of ideas to make your home more gorgeous. I find that I’m more likely to stay on board with an idea if it looks awesome – so make your cloth products look great! That way, you’ll not only be saving money, but you’ll enjoy the look of your kitchen even more. So hop on Pinterest and find some cloth-spiration!
