Solar Power

By Amy Patterson

Solar panels are growing in popularity; in fact, from 2013 to 2014, the use of solar panels grew by 30%. However, even though solar panels have seen this growth, there are still a lot of misconceptions about solar panels and installing them. Here are some of the most common myths, and the realities behind them:

They are super expensive. The cost of adding solar panels continues to decrease. Ten years ago, the cost of covering a roof with panels was $43,000 – now its $29,000. This is not including the tax deductions and 30% rebate you can receive. Is it worth the cost? You can actually estimate your daily savings with this solar panel installation loan calculator.

They only work in sunny places. Solar panels run off of UV light, not direct sunlight – so clouds aren’t an issue.

They require a lot of work. The only work involved is cleaning them annually with a hose and keeping them clear of debris.

What you do need to know:

Only 25% of roofs are suitable for solar panel installation.

Here are the things you’ll want to consider to find out if your home is among the 25%:

  • Roof measurements
  • Building codes for your area
  • Neighborhood or HOA rules
  • State laws or regulations
