Storage Unit Organization

By Morgan Saylor

Whether you’re renovating your home or moving from one home to another and have need for storing your belongings in the interim, a storage unit may work itself into the equation.

Organizing a storage unit can be tricky – ask anyone who has ever rented one. Zillow Porchlight recommends that once you have safely packed your belongings, you should do the following things to make the most of your unit:

  • Install shelves, allowing for easy access and passage to retrieve items as needed
  • Larger items should go closest to the wall, with smaller ones in front, so you can have a clear scope of what is in your unit. Zillow suggests storing your larger furniture pieces vertically and stack chairs.
  • Avoid stacking anything on top of fragile items.
  • Distance items from the wall to allow for air flow to avoid potential for mold and mildew.
  • If you think you’ll need something sooner, rather than later, try to place it closer in the storage unit entry for easier access.
  • Also, know about the materials you’re storing and consider whether or not it would be better off in a climate-controlled facility.
