Buy your spouse a house blog V1-01 (1)Buy Your Spouse a House

We all know that Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark holiday, but all sense and reasoning tends to go out the window when your special someone is watching everyone receive flowers and chocolates at the office, everyone except them. Flowers and chocolates are nice and certainly have their place in brining joy to a day but what about giving a gift with the future in mind? Think about it this way, you are investing in your future together.

Bill Russell is quoted, “To love someone is nothing, to be loved by someone is something, but to be loved by the one you love is everything.” By investing in their future, you are sure to make their heart soar. I’m not suggesting that everyone go out and buy a house tomorrow for their spouse (although how great would that be?) but instead there are some fun ways to show you are invested in buying a house together. Keep reading to find a few ways you could present this gift.

Surprise Them with a House

This grand romantic gesture isn’t for every couple nor for every situation, but these grand moments are the ones that love stories are based on. If you have the means to surprise your spouse with a house and they would love this grand gesture then by all means, do it! Also please film it and share it with the world so we can all feel the excitement with you!

Create a Plan and Share it with Them

Maybe you and your spouse have talked about buying a house together one day however “one day” keeps getting pushed further and further down the road. You’ve likely heard the saying, “a goal without a plan is just a wish,” with that in mind take the time to create a plan. Start by making an appointment with a mortgage banker to find out if you can be pre-approved for the loan amount you had in mind and if not, what steps you need to take to get there. Perhaps this means saving up more for a down payment or working towards building more credit.

Don’t fret if you aren’t pre-approved just yet, this gift will still work! Write small, achievable goals down on a calendar then give the calendar as a gift to your spouse along with a letter explaining your commitment to achieving these goals so you all can achieve the goal of buying a house together.

Jump Start the Process

After you meet with a mortgage banker, you may find that the amount for which you are pre-approved is enough to buy a house. Why not plan a date to drive around the city and look for areas where you all might want to live in the future? You can stop in for an appetizer in one neighborhood, dessert in another, or even pack some of your spouse’s favorite snacks and as you drive around discuss the pros and cons of living in each location. Or you could spend a day together visiting open houses, dreaming of your future together!

While any of these may make your spouse swoon, the process of buying a house can be stressful. However, getting on the same page will make the process less stressful because you will have fewer surprises creating hurdles. Check out our recommendations on some key questions to ask your spouse at the start of this process to get you both on the same page—and closer to finding a house to make your home, together.
