Strange Noises Explained

strange noises explained blog.jpgEverywhere I’ve turned lately there has been some sort of spooky creature lurking (okay, usually they aren’t moving) or creepy movie ad—tis the season after all. With all these creepies infiltrating my preferred, sunshine and rainbows outlook, the noises in my house seem to be harder to disregard. Together, let’s put my mind and yours at ease for a better night’s sleep to come!

Materials that are used to build a house- wood frames, plywood, glass, metal ducts, nails, plumbing pipes—all expand at different rates. This means, according to houselogic, as a house cools at night, the materials may move slightly, rubbing against each other making noises that could make you sit straight up in bed! “But they seem to be happening more frequently,” you may say. To that I respond, “Tis the season” but literally this time, it is the fall season which means that while the sun may warm up our days the nights are usually filled with crisp, cool air causing your house to cool even more.

There are some noises that could point to an issue that needs to be addressed. I found a few in an article on realtor.com:

A Gurgling Toilet Tank:

This means that your toilet is running even when you aren’t on it— which means a water bill that will likely elicit shrieks of horror!

A Hissing Toilet:

If there isn’t a serpent in the toilet, you might have a leaky flapper.

Clunking HVAC:

You want your HVAC unit to have a nice, gentle hum but if it sounds like you have small men dumping coal inside the unit you may have a screw or belt loose.

Squeaky Attic:

Is there anything scarier than this?! We talked about this at the beginning a lot of times there will be settling and adjusting taking place as your home cools. However, if there is a sudden, loud noise—grab your flashlight (and a baseball bat) and go investigate!

Dripping in the walls:

If you hear water running but there is no water being used by anyone in your home this could be a hidden plumbing leak. Don’t ignore this, water damage can lead to a lot of problems!

There are several more included in the article on realtor.com along with how to fix them, please find a link at the end of this blog post.
